The story of Sgt. John Pellegrino
as reported by a letter from the
Army
Oct,13 1968 Sgt Pellegrino was serving as a squad leader during a company
sized reconnaissance in force operation. While moving through dense jungle
terrain, the point element was suddenly engaged by a large concealed enemy
force utilizing claymore mines and automatic weapons fire. In the initial
moments of contact, the lead element sustained several casualties and was
cut off from the main body of the unit. without regard for his personal
safety, Sgt Pellegrino quickly moved to a forward position and began
delivering a devastating volume of suppressive fire which enabled his
wounded comrades to be evacuated. As the enemy concentrated their fire upon
him, he continued his assault and advanced to a position from which he could
more effectively engage the insurgents. At this time, Sgt Pellegrino was
fatally injured by a hostile round.
